Clay

I specialize in creating whimsical clay pieces using ceramic pottery and stoneware clay.

Garden Totem Poles: I have taken my exploration into expression through clay to the next level.  My garden totem poles depict the things in life that make me smile.  Drawing inspiration from symbolic things found in nature and daily life, I create stoneware pieces that serve as a personal declaration, hand-building each piece.  I use the same glazing techniques to make the pieces vibrant in color.  Stoneware pieces are created from a single slab of clay about one-half inch thick, they take a long time to dry before they can be fired to a much higher temperature and then glazed in the bright colors.

Framed Clay Artwork:  Once, I have sketched my design, I cut the pieces out of the low-fire pottery clay using several tools.  Each piece is cut out individually. I dry the pieces for several days, (depending on the thickness of the clay), then I fire them in my kiln at a temperature that will turn each piece into bisque. Once I can remove the pieces from the kiln, I apply 3 coats of bright-colored glazes to make the pieces vibrant.  I then fire them once more to achieve a brilliant color and shine. Once the kiln cools, I can remove the pieces and let them cool. I then decide if I want, to add detail in pen and ink, watercolor, colored pencil, photos, or other items. Once the artwork is finished, I cut the white mats and frame the finished piece in a shadow box-style frame.
